How To Start A Book Club

At the beginning of this year I decided to start a book club. I wanted something fun to do and build a bit of a community with a few people, and of course I also wanted to get in the habit of reading more, so a book club seemed like the perfect idea!!! From Oprah’s Book Club and the cult following behind Reese Witherspoons, book clubs have never been more en vogue than they are right now. Keep reading to see my top tips on how to start a book club!!!

I actually decided to start a book club with people I didn’t know. On Facebook I’m part FB group for the community that I live in and there are thousands of members. I posted on that site that I was going to start a book club and anyone who was interested could sign up (I capped the number of people at 30 so it wouldn’t get too large). There was a lot of interest so I started up a FB group for a book club!! So far it has been so fun I’ve met new people in my community and we have read some good books!

How To Start a Book Club

  1. Find your book club tribe- I recommend putting feelers out on social media (decide wether it will be in person or online). If it’s in person you could post on some local FB groups you are apart of and ask your friends too. Make sure you also have a number in mind of how many people you want in the club.
  2. Make a FB group for your club- Once you have some potential members make a FB group and add everyone. This is a great way to communicate with the group.
  3. Decide how often you will meet up- This is something you want to decide fairly early on. I posted a poll in my Facebook group for members to vote on and we decided once a month.
  4. Find a meetup place- we have done our meetups at my house, but everyone can take a turn at their place if they want. Some other options for meeting places are coffee shops, restaurants, or even outside.
  5. Choose your reads- I usually ask members each month to put forward a book and then we usually vote on the book. You could also have each member choose a book of their choice that month and take turns. I definitely recommend taking everyone’s opinions into consideration in your book club and changing it up a little.
  6. Change it up- You can also come up with some fun ideas to keep things interesting. For example you could do a book that’s based on a movie that’s coming up then everyone could go for wine and watch the movie in the theatre! Or if it’s summer pick a great beach read!
  7. Plan the meeting- if you are hosting make sure you have some great snacks my caramelized onion hummus and veggies would be great. And don’t forget the wine (you can also ask people to bring their favourite wine or snack)! I also recommend printing off some questions so you can get a good discussion going (lots of books have the book club questions in the back).

Some Great Book Club Reads

I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a good book.
