Rice Water for Hair Growth- Does it Really Work?
One of the best things about this beauty trend is it’s a simple and cost effective DIY beauty treatment and we love that! This may seem like a new trend but it’s actually been around for a long time in countries like Asia. According to beauty experts rice water when used correctly can help hair grow thick, long, and strong, and help prevent breakage.
Benefits of Rice Water
Rice grains have a high starch content approx 70-80% and are packed with vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants. When saturated in water it is infused with all this goodness. Rice water packs a potent punch of moisturizing and healthy ingredients that coat the hair. The starch in the rice water is said to be one of the reasons that it helps hair grow longer and helps to strengthen hair so it can grow longer and thicker.

How to Make Rice Water
There are actually a few different ways to make rice water.

Ingredients
- uncooked rice (brown or white)
- water
- jar with a lid
The Soak Method
Start by rinsing your rice, combine 1/2 cup of uncooked rice with 3 cups of water in a container. Let rice soak for 1hr in this time the nutrients from the rice will be soaking into the water. Shake or stir often. After the hour is up strain the rice and pour the rice water into a bottle. The rice water will keep for up to 1 week in the fridge or 3-4 days in your bathroom. This method is quick but you can’t eat rice after so it’s kind of a waste.
The Boil Method
Start again by rinsing the rice. Go about cooking the rice as you normally would except add an extra 2-3 cups of water. When the rice is done cooking strain remaining water into a jar. Store in the fridge up to one week.
The Fermented Method
This method is very similar to the soak method but you will soak for much longer (12-24 hrs). This long soak time will help kick off the fermenting process. Combine 3 cups of water to 1/2 a cup of rinsed rice. Shake a couple times throughout the soaking process. Strain out the rice and store in a jar in the fridge for up to one week. This method is said to enhance the level of nutrients in the rice water.

How to Use Rice Water for Your Hair
- Prepare the rice water (see above methods)
- Wash hair as usual with shampoo and rinse
- Take the rice water and use to massage into your hair and scalp
- If you have time let sit on the hair for at least 20min
- Rinse rice water out of hair
- Finish with your usual conditioner
- Start with using once a week. You can use up to 2-3 times per week
